Diode lasers use a single wavelength of light that has a high absorption rate in melanin. The laser heats the melanin in the hair follicle and destroys the root and blood flow to the hair follicle, disabling hair growth permanently while preserving surrounding tissue. At Nectarine MD, we use the latest technology for hair removal using the 810 diode for faster, safer for hair removal compared to IPL. We reserve IPL, which emits multiple wavelengths of light, for treatments that are better suited for skin.
You may feel a sharp snap or warmth, similar to a rubber band. Discomfort is short-lived and well tolerated. Numbing cream may be applied if needed, and we apply cooling as we go to come and soothe the area.
While 810 diode laser hair removal is safe for all skin tones, it works best on candidates with lighter skin and darker hair. Because the laser targets pigment, light hair on light skin usually requires a different modality like electrolysis.
Hair removal usually shows visible improvement after the first session with slower growth and thinner hair when it does start to grow 2-3 weeks later.
Hair grows in cycles, making it necessary to receive a series of treatments. This varies from patient to patient. Treatments are spaced 4 to 6 weeks apart and usually require a minimum of six treatments for long term, hair free skin.
While side effects are extremely uncommon, occasionally patients can experience mild discomfort or damage to the natural skin texture, such as scarring, swelling, blisters, bruising, hyper or hypo pigmentation. These side effects are extremely rare with the specialized 810 diode and are more commonly assiciated with IPL when used for hair removal. At NectarineMD, the 810 diode is the only laser we use for hair removal, and reserve IPL for skin conditions that it’s better suited for such as red and brown skin pigment.
